The Apollo Murders
This is my kind of book. Jack Ryan-esque drama, set during Apollo-era spaceflight. The granular details of flying, what it takes to get 3 people to the moon, and what they experience up there is hard for me to not like. Throw in some Soviet vs. US Cold War tension and I’m really going to like it.
Our main character is a one-eyed former pilot who serves as a liaison between Houston and Washington D.C. He’s basically the bridge of the two parts of this story - the space part, and the Cold War part. I won’t give away the plot because that’s some of the fun, but if you like action that is exciting, and characters that, for the most part, make a lot of sense, you’ll have no problem reading this book. Sure, it falls under dad fiction, but that stuff is what I’m looking for. I thought the use of real life characters and ships and space stations helped ground the story in the very realistic. It goes from something that could maybe possibly happen, to something that could definitely happen if the dice landed the right way.
I’m not going to say it’s a must read, but if you’re into space, the Moon, or Cold War-era spy thrillers, this is a book you should pick up.
