Every Tool's a Hammer
Most celebrity books or memoirs follow the same story. Here’s what my childhood was like, how I got my big break, and the famous/cool stuff I do. Adam Savage’s Every Tool’s a Hammer isn’t like that. It actually talks about a topic he is interested (and proficient!) in. He gives tips to, and extolls the virtues of, being a maker.
A maker, to Adam, is obvious. Someone who makes things. A woodworker, knitter, artist, and cosplayer are all makers. So while Adam does talk about some of the basic celebrity book topics (childhood, big break, and some cool things) he does so in a frame around making. He also spends full chapters talking about tools, or certain processes, which is so much more interesting to me. I would love to see James Cameron write a book all about submarining, but maybe that’s just because I’m secretly a 50-year old man. A better example would be a baseball player writing a memoir all about the fundamentals of the game, or something like that.
I would definitely recommend this. It’s fun, quick, and you’ll probably be inspired to create something when it’s done. More of this type of thing, celebrity authors.
