Longitude
This is an interesting little book, like the equivalent of the Chernobyl miniseries on HBO. The story here is all about the creation of longitude, surprisingly enough. Yes, there was a time, and a long time at that, without those lines. Ships had to sail by latitude, guesswork, and the stars. For the longest time, navigation by the seas in Europe was half luck.
Really, this is the story of a clockmaker, and the political machinations of the inner circle who strove to take his credit for themselves.
Not much to say, since it’s historical. It’s short, but doesn’t feel like it needs to stay longer. It gets in, tells the story, and gets out. Take the day or two to read it and learn ya something!
Also, if you don’t take my word for it, the Introduction was written by Neil Armstrong (yes, the one you’re thinking of)!
